Washday Memoirs with a Henna treat

hey beauties

hope you all had a lovely weekend. I had one busy hectic one and it being a very important weekend to me my dads 6th memorial since he was promoted to Glory six years ago, I had to make a plan to make sure i was spending the day with my family and celebrating his life. At the same time i wanted to do a Henna treatment and have waited so long to do one.

Eventually i made a plan Saturday night was my usual prepoo and prep for washday routine.
- Coconut oil prepoo : warmed up 2 tablespoons of EVCO then did a scalp massage for 3 to 5 minutes it was the last day of the inversion method so did my 4 minutes inverted then soon after i wore my shower cap, satin scarf and satin bonnet on top.
- prepared the Henna mixture i added a tablespoon of Jamaican Black Castor oil, a tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and 1 egg york and 100ml of green tea. Mixed the ingredients till it formed a smooth paste and let it stand overnight
- Next morning i rinsed out the coconut oil with luke warm water then shampoo using a sulphate free shampoo the ORS Invigorating sulphate free shampoo with Rosemary and mint
-i did a quick green tea rinse i am trying to minimize a lot of shedding like i experienced in my last stretch.
-I went on to apply the henna in sections then when my whole head was covered i put some cling wrap on the a shower cap my satin scarf and the wig to prepare for dads Memorial.
The drive to the farm was 1 and half hours and then the service took another 2 - 3 hours so had the henna on for just over 4 hours and just before lunch i rinsed it out and put some moisturizing conditioner after 6 thorough rinses.
-I used the Beautiful textures Rapid Repair conditioner for another 2 hours as i wanted to get home and finish doing my hair there.
-i later went on to rinse the conditioner out and t shirt dried to take out all the excess water then i air dried and before bed time as tired as i was detangled my hair as the knots are becoming crazy by the day deeper into my stretch, put in my usual leave ins

Overall i enjoyed the Henna experience and will surely try to do one Henna treat every month. My hair feels stronger and looks darker. Washday wasnt exactly a breeze as last weekends because of the ups and downs i had to do. I am happy i got to pamper my hair at the same time i was remembering my dad on this special day MHSRIP.

Have a great day all

(this is just going to be busy for me but i am strong lets do this)

1. How many languages can you speak?
I can speak 3 languages Shona, English and French

2. What's your favourite part of blogging?
My favorite part of blogging is when i share my hair journey experiences with so many women around the world over and knowing that each particular post i have share might relate to someone in particular and will make a difference in their healthy hair journey.

3. What's your least favourite part of blogging?
i really wouldnt call it a least favourite part of blogging its just that at times i feel like i am repeating content over and over again and that might bore readers though i know the content being the same the experience is totally different. And also having to trash some products when i do my product reviews.

4. How many siblings do you have and what is your position of birth?

I have always loved long hair. I would salivate at those African models with long hair in magazines and wish that was all mine. So when i started taking good care of my hair i searched through hairblogs and you tube did exactly what they said but realised my hair reacted a bit differently to theirs and some products i use also reacted differently. so i decided to start blogging about my healthy hair journey and help so many other women who want to have healthy long hair be it relaxed or natural.

6. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest and why?
Facebook and Twitter, Intsagram
we all use the social medium differently. Most of the experience that you get when using social networks is still pleasant and very rewarding. I get to share updates with familly, Friends and business colleagues,i get to say hello and connect with our relatives who live far away from us,  i can promote articles and information that i think is shareable and relevant, sharing pictures and leaving comments and opinions is really fun. Lastly meet new people.

If you are not a better person than you were yesterday then what are you doing and what is the point ?, think about that...and most of all enjoy life whilst you still can you never know whats in store for you tomorrow.

11.  If you were given 1 million dollars what would you do with it?

Washday memoirs @ 13 weeks post relaxer

 Hey all
Hope you had a pleasant weekend.
  • Pre-pooed: Since I am on the Hairlista Coconut oil challenge i used extra virgin coconut oil for overnight on my scalp and my strands. I detangled hair in four sections for about a full hour trying to negotiate with the thick new growth then I massaged my scalp with warm coconut oil for about 5 minutes and put my hair under a shower cap, wrapped my satin scarf and added my satin bonnet on top to secure my cap for the night.
  • Shampoo cleansing: Aftera warm water rinse  I cleansed with ORS HaiRepair Invigorating Sulphate Free shampoo. was not to sure weather to use my ORS creamy aloe shampoo for clarifying but i just had it out just in case. I rinsed twice and went straight into applying the Aphogee keratin 2 minute reconstructor i put my shower cap for 2 minutes with a hot towel on top rinsed out then quickly applied the Aphogee Balancing moisturizer for 2 minutes this time i didnt use a cap i rinsed it out thoruoghly then t shirt dried my hair. I did this step because i felt my hair was'nt strong enough when i did the protein treatment last washday.
  • Deep Conditioned: After the mini protein corrective treatment i went on to do a moisturizing Deep Conditioner. and i definately needed a steam treatment. I used the Elasta QP DPR remoisturizing conditioner and mixed it with a tablespoon of Beautiful textures rapid repair conditioner and added a teapoon of JBCO and EVCO and steamed for 30 minutes using my thermal spa steaming cap. I let my hair cool for about 5 minutes from the steam treatment and then rinsed with luke warm water then did an apple cider vinegar rinse as my final rinse.
Leave Ins, Drying, moisturizing and sealing : I t-shirt dried for 20 minutes then sprayed the Aphogee keratin and green tea restructurizer then continued to airdry for another hour as my hair has become thicker and the new growth was a mission to get it to dry i have put myself on a no heat challenge till relaxer day so no blow drying at all. After my hair was dry  i applied Cantu shea butter leave in repair cream. I then oiled my scalp with coconut oil and sealed with Hot six oil. Left my hair in a two strand twist out and went to bed.

Am pretty pleased with the results they were quite good. My hair and especially my new growth felt more moisturized than it had since last washday. There was minimal shedding though i skipped my black tea and green tea rinse, but noticed i had a few knots in the middle maybe because the hair there is way more thicker now i need to be patient when detangling next time.Otherwise i enjoyed this washday it was a breeze and very relaxing too.

Please share how your washday experience went.

How to take care of your hair while stretching

12 weeks post and the stretch for me begins

I have previously stated that I will stretch to 16 weeks and not beyond after my previous stretch had some setbacks. But at the same time I really want to texlax my hair at least twice a year, I am on a 24 week challenge which I might make or end if need be. I’ve found that from 8 weeks after texlaxing my hair, it starts becoming difficult to comb and deal with the new growth. It also becomes difficult for my hair to lay flat as smooth as I want it to be and too many fly aways which I try and keep contained. In order for me or anyone else who once to stretch their relaxer I am going to do the following:

Firstly What does it mean to stretch your relaxer?
Traditionally hair stylists have encouraged women to relax their hair every 4 to 6 weeks. Stretching your relaxer means lengthening the period between your touch ups, so instead of 4 to 6 weeks, you wait for 8 to 10 weeks or more.

Why stretch your relaxer?
-To prevent over lapping
Hair grows on average  half an inch per month. When touching up a relaxer, chemical is supposed to be applied to the new growth but if there is only half inch of curly new growth it becomes very difficult to prevent relaxer from getting on the already relaxed hair. This results in overlapping the relaxer which causes the hair to become over processed, brittle and prone to breakage.

-To give your scalp a break from harsh chemicals

-To give you enough time to treat the hair and strengthen it before the next chemical application.

Tips for stretching relaxers

1. Be Gentle
while streching the hair is fragile, be gentle and patient while detangling. Try to do this while the hair is wet and full of conditioner. If dry detangling works better for you, be sure to use a detangling spray on the roots to soften them.

2. Prepoo
I like to prepoo with Extra Virgin Coconut oil when I am stretching . I usually do it overnight, massage my scalp with warm coconut oil the add the rest to my hair at times I make sure its well saturated lol put on my plastic conditioning cap then satin scarf and woolen hat off to bed. The next morning my new growth and hair are so soft I mean cloudy soft its amazing and a good feeling too then I go on to do my usual wash day routine.

3. Deep condition your hair with heat. The line of demarcation is the weakest point of your hair. Deep conditioning helps to even out the difference in textures and makes it easier to comb through this point with less breakage. After wasing my hair, I usually apply my deep conditioner to my hair, especially the new growth like I would a relaxer and smooth it in just like I would a relaxer.

b. Protein
Protein is very important as it helps strengthen the strands. Get protein by deep conditioning and also by using a leave in with protein on your relaxed hair.

4. Co-wash your hair. In addition to deep conditioning my hair after shampooing, I co-wash once a week. I apply my co-wash conditioner to dry hair the same way I apply my deep conditioner and I smooth it in. Sometimes, I moisten my hair a little before applying the conditioner. I cover my hair with a shower cap and leave it in for about 15 –20 minutes. I rinse off the conditioner very well and apply my leave-in conditioner and air dry.

5. Keep the new growth moisturized
Try not to let the  new growth to curl up especially after washing or moisturising
dry your hair  in a stretched state. This can be done by drying in 6 to 8 ponytails, African threading (mabhanzi) bantu knots, braids, or cornrows. All of these styles pull the roots straight, remember this is to be done while the roots are wet so that it dries stretched.
Deep conditioning and moisturizing with a spray containing glycerine helps to moisturize the new growth. Many long term stretchers use 'S-curl'  no drip curl activator moisturizer spray on the roots (only the roots) every night, then pull the hair into a stretched state (using one of the above methods) and allow it to dry overnight.  It is one of my staples when stretching

6. Low Manipulation
Try to comb your hair once a week for the most, at 8 weeks post relaxer is not the time to comb through your hair every day. When stretching your relaxer it is not advisable to use fine tooth combs to comb through your tightly curled new growth, that's just asking for breakage. I first detangle hair with my fingers then use the comb after and its usually 2 to 3 times a week when I remove my bun to moisturize and seal. Instead, opt for low manipulation styles like updo's, roller sets, braid outs, bantu knot outs, buns. I use braids and cornrows and some people use weaves but be careful with this as the weight of the synthetic hair can put stress on the fragile line of demarcation. Also remember to continue to spray your hair with a good leave-in conditioner containing protein while its in the braids/ weave

7. Tie a scarf to keep it flat: When you have gone far into the stretch, it’s easier to just pack your hair into a bun. When going to bed, part your hair and style it the way you would like it to be in the morning. Tie a scarf to make your hair flat. In the morning, take off your scarf  just before you step out the door. Your hair will look nice and flat.

8. Stretch Gradually
Gradually increase your stretching period to get your hair accustomed to stretching and for you to master the different techniques. If you currently relax every 6 weeks, then try for 7 the next time, then for 8 and continue to build up to an interval you are satisfied with. I think 10-12 weeks is good for bone straight relaxed hair. Texlaxed  ladies can stretch a bit longer because their line of demarcation is not as fragile. I want to get into the routine of texlaxing  my hair every 6 months, but I am still adjusting on how to get there slowly but surely. I have stretched for 32 weeks before my longest ever.

I hope this post was useful, feel free to ask questions and share tips on how you stretch.

Finally braids are out @ 6 weeks

Hie all

Hope you are all good, I am relieved, Yep i could not wait to undo my braids. I would normally go beyond 6 weeks but not exceed 8 weeks, this time i suffered to stretch to 6 weeks and probably because i had 2 washes only so my scalp was becoming itchy and i couldnt handle it. One other thing is i missed my hair so much.
I will share my experience of how i removed my Senegalese twists and the process of detangling through to deep conditioning and my protective style after the take down.

1. I unravel the twists or braids carefully in sections ( I usually do about 10-12
2. I then moisturized the unraveled section with a water and conditioner mix ( i use this mix to moisturize because the idea is to provide your hair with enough slip to detangle with ease).
3. Massage the mix in a downward method making sure all strands are moist. (do not massage aggressively or any other motion other than down as this will cause matting of the hair)
4.I gently finger detangle starting from the tips to roots then after with a wide tooth comb making sure all shed hairs are removed. During this time also don't forget to remove shed hairs from the comb as well as your hands to prevent redepositing the shed hairs into your detangled hair.
twists or braids....you can do more or less depending on the size of the extensions)
Expect to have quite some shed hair depending on the time you spent with the braids in
5. Once completely detangled braided or twist up that section to get it out of the way.
6.After all extensions were out and detangled took i out the twisted or braided sections to prepare for my washing session. Then i put hair in 4-6 sections for an easier washing technique.  (you can also opt to leave the orginal sections from detanling to wash in).

***When taking out braids, you wanna detangle BEFORE getting in the shower. When you have braids in that long, there's a lot of shed hair that will "lock up" on you, if you just hit the loose hair with streaming water. It's a nightmare, and you'll lose so much more hair.

Because i had these in for 6 weeks it was obviously my heavy protein deep conditioning treatment was due. I used the Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise mixed with one egg and added a tablespoon of Extra virgin olive oil and a tablespoon of Avocado oil.I had this on for about an hour and then rinsed out, soon after i used my Rosemary water and Black tea rinse then air dried. I sprayed my Aphogee Keratin & Green tea Restructurizer i love this stuff , and finally applied Cantu Shea butter leave in conditioning repair cream sealed with Hot six oil and used Jamaican Black Castor Oil on my scalp and i put my hair in a bun. will put up pics below.

Otherwise it was not as bad having my hair in this protective style especially with the cold weather it did justice to my hair i have at least 1 and 1/2 inches of new growth and am loving the texture.thanks to my braid spray and EVCO my hair was really moisturized take down was not as bad except the locked hair in the back and the shed hairs that always make me shed a tear though its normal to have shed hair after 6 weeks of Protective Styling. So whats next ,my hair is on a one week break then cornrows in for 3 weeks. will update on that development soon.
